Operated by Central Highlands Regional Council, Emerald Airport is the 40th in the list of airports with the most number of revenue passengers for the financial year of 2009-2010. The airport is located south of Emerald town center, on the Springsure Road.
Runways
Emerald Airport has two runways. The main runway is designated 06/24, and has a length measurement of 1,900m. On the other hand, the second runway, 15/33, is only 926m in length. 6/24 is surfaced with asphalt, while 15/33 is surfaced with gravel.
Terminals
All flights of QantasLink and Virgin Australia operate in a single terminal. QantasLink's e-ticket can be purchased from the check-in counters; however, no facilities are available to accommodate ticket reissues. Baggage claim area is located in the arrivals hall. Light refreshments for the passengers and visitors are available through the kiosk facilities.
Last March 30, 2012, the Gillard Labor Government announced that $640,000 will be allotted to improve the terminal in terms of security. Some facilities that will be added through this funding are two explosive trace detection machines, additional screening machines for the check-in and hand carry baggage area, and metal detectors.
Flights and Destinations
There are two airlines operating in Emerald Airport - QantasLink operated by the Sunstate Airlines and Virgin Australia by the Skywest Airlines. Both airlines offer flights going to Brisbane. Every week, there are at least 30 flights going to and from the airport.
Transport To and From the Airport
Primary access to the airport is through cars, car rentals or taxi services. For passengers who will bring their own vehicle, the car park area is located in front of the terminal building. The first hour of parking is free of charge. Parking spaces for the disabled are also available. Car and taxi rentals through companies like Nudget, Avis, Hertz and Thrifty is also an option.
