Probably the country's only airport with more than two runways, Moorabbin Airport happens to be the nation's fourth busiest airport in terms of aircraft movements. The air facility is now the major training center in the state of Victoria as well as the primary hub for charter and private flying and aerial works. Is is also considered as the center of sales and aircraft maintenance in southern part of Australia.

History

The airport of Moorabbin was planned in 1946 as a result of the government's effort to solve the crisis of vegetable shortage in Melbourne. Mentone area was the site of the state's largest agricultural farmlands where most of the vegetable supply in Melbourne came from. During the vegetable shortage, the government purchased 293 acres of the farmlands to build an airport to facilitate the transportation of farm produce to Melbourne.

The Civil Aviation Department of the State of Victoria granted 160,000 pounds to build the facility. The planned construction of the airport was met with opposition from the landowners who also own the farms which were affected by the project.

However, three years later, in December 1949, the airport was opened to the public.

Runways

There is no other airport in Australia, major or regional, that can boast of more than five runways other than Moorabbin Airport. The area of Mentone is considered to be the state's vegetable capital where most of the high value crops and other agricultural and poultry products come from. The length of all four runways exceed 3,000 meters.

Terminal

The facility has a single terminal building which is divided into two wings. The north wing is used by passengers while the south wing is mainly used by the airport management offices. The passenger terminal wing of the building is both used by charter passengers as well as regular and general aviation passengers.

Flights and Destinations

The Moorabbin Airport is the only access to the mainland from the King Island, off the coast of northern Tasmania. King Island Airline is also the only airline that flies between the mainland and the island. The airline offers both charter and freight flights in addition to regular passenger transport service.
