The airport is situated almost midway between Brisbane and Sydney. In 2010, the airport handled a total of 220,000 passengers and 5,393 aircraft movements. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is the owner, developer, and operator of the facility.

History

Port Macquarie Airport is one of the newest airports in the country. It is a separate business entity within the Council of Port Macquaries-Hastings. Its development as an airport was primarily triggered by the influx of visitors coming from different parts of the country who come to the North Coast region of New South Wales for its warm weather and many popular beaches.

Before the Airport Master Plan 2010 was created, there was a prior master plan designed by the Council in 2004. They decided to scrap the first master plan after they realized that something was amiss. In 2010, the Council proposed a new master plan for the redevelopment of the entire facility. Under this plan, the airport will undergo a redevelopment program that will transform the facility into a world-class regional airport.

With the new master plan, the Council is hoping that the airport will be able to handle forecast growth in passenger traffic. Likewise, they hope that the redevelopment of the facility will bring rewards to its already vibrant economy.
