Qantas Offers Frequent Flyers a New Way to Collect Status Credits

3rd Nov 2016

Qantas Frequent Flyer members now have a sweet choice between getting bonus points or earning status credits once they reach a certain milestone in a year.

The new bonus scheme the Aussie carrier is offering gives its most loyal customers a choice between 8,000 Qantas Points or 50 status credits. Under the previous scheme frequent flyers could get 8,000 Qantas Points after they reach 500, 1,000, 1,500 or 2,000 milestone.

Speaking about the new bonus scheme, Qantas Loyalty Chief Executive Officer Lesley Grant said:

"Status credits are highly valued by our members. While there are lots of ways to earn Qantas points, status credits are particularly important to our members because it's what differentiates them as frequent flyers. The more they fly, the more status credits they earn, helping them to reach a higher status level and enjoy more benefits."

The Australian flag carrier this way continues with excellent offers aimed toward its frequent flyer members.

Last week, for example, Qantas unveiled a deal with the online food delivery service Deliveroo, which allows its loyal customers to earn Qantas Points when they order takeaway.

Before that, Qantas also entered a partnership with Airbnb, the first of its kind, allowing its customers to earn precious points when they book with accommodations with the sharing economy giant.

Qantas managed to earn $1.45 billion in revenue from its Frequent Flyer program in the 12 months to 30th June this year. The Flying Kangaroo currently has 11.5 million frequent flyer members and that number is only growing thanks to these new offers.

Virgin Australia Follows with Offers of its Own

Meanwhile, not wanting to be outdone by its rival, Virgin Australia is offering bonus schemes of its own. These have allowed VA to generate $328 million in revenue in the 12 months to 30th June.

One of these offers is a deal Virgin made with Coles, where its Velocity Frequent Flyer members can convert flybuy points they get when shopping at Coles into Velocity Frequent Flyer miles. In addition, Velocity members can also earn status credits by shipping at Coles, First Choice Liquor and Liquorland.
