Virgin Australia Expands Frequent Flyer Partnership with Alitalia

15th Jun 2016

Virgin Australia Velocity frequent flyer Program members will now have an opportunity to earn points and status credits on flights within Europe thanks to the Australian carrier expanding its partnership with Alitalia.

The Australian airline and the Italian flag carrier made the announcement this Friday and it follows their earlier codesharing deal that they made back in April.

According to the agreement, Velocity and MilleMiglia (Alitalia's frequent flyer program) will be able to use points and redeem flights on both Virgin Australia's and Alitalia's networks. In addition, Velocity members will also be able to earn points and status credits on flights operated by the Italian airline. This includes not only Europe, but also other regions where Alitalia operates, such as the Middle East, North and South America.

MilleMiglia members can now also earn points on Virgin-operated flights.

Karl Schuster, Chief Executive Officer of Velocity Frequent flyer program said the following about the codesharing partnership with Alitalia:

"To be able to access 10 of Alitalia's premium loungers located across Italy and in New York will provide a more seamless and enjoyable travel experience for Velocity Platinum and Gold members. We look forward to welcoming eligible members of MilleMiglia into Virgin Australia's 12 stunning lounges across Australia. We are committed to rewarding our members in innovative ways and giving them more options to explore our growing international network."

Velocity Members Can Only Earn Points, but Not Status Credits on AirBerlin Flights

Alitalia isn't the only Euro-registered airline to be codesharing with Virgin Australia. However, unlike the arrangement with the Italian carrier, where Velocity Frequent flyer program members can both earn points and status credits on flights operated by the other airline, the Australian carrier's partnership with AirBerlin is lacking one crucial component.

Namely, Velocity members can only earn points, but not status credits on AirBerlin's intra-Europe flights. Again, the extended partnership with Alitalia allows Velocity members to do both (earn points and status credits).

Alitalia also codeshares with Silkair and Singapore Airlines for flights within Asia, Delta Air Lines for flights in North and South America, Etihad Airways for North Africa and the Middle East and Air New Zealand for the Tasman.

Until recently, Alitalia had an FFP with another Australian-based carrier, Qantas.
