The airport is located 14 kilometers north of the city. In 2009, it handled almost 1.2 million passengers making it among the country's busiest airports.

History

Williamtown Civilian Airport was the old name of the present airport that opened in 1947. But before then, the site where the first charter flight landed at the RAAF Base Williamtown was owned by The Royal Australian Air Force. A scheduled commercial flight commenced a year later, signaling the commercial operation of the airport.

For more than 40 years, the airport was run by the Commonwealth Government until 1990, when the two councils of Newcastle and Port Stephens agreed to jointly operate and manage the civil area of the RAAF Base Williamtown. At this time, the airport was renamed Newcastle Airport to distinguish it from the military air base that lies beside it.

Runways

Newcastle (Williamtown) Airport has a single runway, 12/30, which measures 2,438 meters long and it has shared with the RAAF Base Williamtown ever since.

Terminal

The first true terminal building was not opened until 1975, through the effort of the Federal Minister for Transport, Charles Jones. The terminal building had been subjected to constant renovations and upgrades since that time on. The first major upgrade that saw the expansion of a terminal building was in 1994. Two more terminal expansions occurred in 2000 and 2005 to accommodate the increasing passenger traffic. The modern terminal now boasts of four dining and refreshment options and a souvenir shop/newstand. It has also complete basic amenities and facilities which ensure passengers a hassle-free experience while inside the airport.

Flights and Destinations

All major regional airlines in the country operate in the airport. They include Aeropelican, Brindabella Airlines, Jetstar Airways, Virgin Australia, Regional Express and QantasLink. Major destinations include Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ballina, Albury, Sydney, Narrabi, Melbourne and Canberra.

Transport to and from the Airport

The airport is serviced by two public bus companies several times daily. There are also taxi units available just outside of the terminal building. All major car rental companies have their respective desks at the arrival end of the terminal. If you care for a more comfortable and a bit of luxury transfer, chauffeur-driven cars are also available.
