SAA and Virgin Australia Announce Partnership

24th Mar 2014

South Africa Airways and Virgin Australia have announced plans to enter into a new codesharing agreement.

South Africa Airways already has a partnership with Qantas with whom the South African airline codeshares their flight from Perth to Johannesburg and Qantas's flight from Sydney to Johannesburg.

With this new agreement SAA passengers should be able to book flights from Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide to Johannesburg by flying to Perth and connecting to the Perth to Johannesburg flight offered by SAA.

Booking will be available from today and tickets can be purchased for travel starting on February 11th.

Virgin Australia already flies to Johannesburg through Singapore with a codesharing agreement with Singapore AIrlines that offers full Velocity points and status credit earnings.

SAA maintains that its new partnership with Virgin will not impact its partnership with Qantas and notes that the new alliance will not run any flights through Sydney which it considers the anchor for the partnership with Qantas.

In any case, the Qantas/SAA partnership agreement expires in December and if both parties wish to continue with it , they will need to reapply to the International Air Services commission.

Qantas might be planning to stop flying from Sydney to Johannesburg in an effort to cut losses and instead fly through Dubai using a codesharing agreement it has with Emirates.

SAA?s Country Manager for Australasia Tim Clyde-Smith noted that "we look forward to strengthening our partnership with Virgin Australia in the future."
